My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

To forsake is to abandon, to desert, to leave, to quit, to depart from, to leave behind, to leave high and dry, to turn one's back on, to cast aside, to reject, to relinquish, to dispense with, to forgo, to desist from, to forswear, to disclaim, to disown, to disavow, to discard, to set aside, to wash one's hands of, to repudiate, to have done with, to disown, to renounce or give up something valued or pleasant.

At this point on the cross of calvary, it is safe to conclude that the Lord forsook the Lord JESUS, turned His back on Him, disowning Him because of the great change that was now easily identified on JESUS at the cross.

What really was different about Christ at this point on the cross of calvary that made Him different from He who was identified at the transfiguration (Mark. 9:7, Luke 9:35) and at Jesus's baptism (Matt. 3:17). At the transfiguration and baptism, He was the beloved son in whom God was well pleased but at this point on the cross of Calvary, the eyes of the Lord were turned aside from Him.

Habakkuk 1:13a helps to suggest a reason why this happened. "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity:" Do we try to insinuate at this point that JESUS committed any iniquity or why then couldn't the Lord look upon Him up to the extent of forsaking Him at this hour making Him cry out in the Greek language "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?"

At this point on the cross of Calvary, JESUS bore upon Himself the sins and unrighteousness of the whole world (1Peter. 2:24) and since the Lord cannot stand to behold sin, He truly felt the full brunt of the absence of GOD, something that was rather alien to Him all through His stay here on earth.

"Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed." - 1 Peter  2:24

Permit me to premise a little bit on 1Peter. 2:24 for us to know and see exactly a great need why the Lord had to turn away His face at this time of great agony. JESUS didn't suffer all this all for nothing but there was a far greater plan in His mind because He felt that by the time He died together with our sins on the cross and by His resurrection, we would be able to evermore live unto righteousness, forever sold out to GOD.

Now for as many as believe in Him, this is presently and forever the case but for those who still do not believe in His perfect work for them at calvary, they loose out of this privilege and still are identified in their old state but for them this atoning sacrifice still obtains such that whenever they come to believe in the Lord Jesus and accept His sacrifice for them, they too can be saved.

Without Christ, all men stand filthy before GOD (Isa. 64:6), even the best of us moralist (always doing the right things morally (no fighting, no stealing, no backbiting etc.) still do not have any rights to access the throne of GOD. Our only true access point is through JESUS. In John. 14:6, JESUS says "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." and whosoever believes in Him would not perish but have eternal life (John. 3:16).

It is by believing that we gain the position of son-ship and as sons, we have a direct access to GOD, our father.

Permit me to emphasize again for purposes of utter clarity that there is only one way unto GOD and that simply remains in believing in JESUS as Lord and saviour. Seeing that this is the only way to GOD and equally our constant need for GOD, it remains my urgent desire that you dear friend would receive His gift of salvation completed for you on the cross of calvary, He bore your sins so that you henceforth cease from being a slave unto sin and now a son of GOD (Rom. 6:15-23), having free access to GOD through JESUS CHRIST.

(Please note that when we say sons, we mean the position of a heir, an inheritor and not one of the exclusive male gender.)

GOD BLESS YOU
