Woman, behold your son!...Behold your mother

"Woman, behold thy son!... Behold thy mother!" John 19:26–27

A son is an offspring borne of a mother, many attimes there are usually behavioural traits transferred from the mother to the son such that unintentionally a son would likely behave as the mother.

The importance of a mother in the life of a son is quite important because they could help teach compassion and forbearance,  attributes which help the son in relating with other people ensuring best relationships.

In many cultures in my country, when a woman bears a son is when she truly has become a mother because of the prospect of prolonging the family name which the son on bearing children would do and this is actually a big deal in my country. I believe every child is precious, no one is of greater importance than the other.

At the time JESUS made this statement on the cross was at the point of dying. Many people still query at this point and say where exactly was Jesus's earthly father, Joseph at this phase, this question we may not have an answer to but one thing we are certain about is that until the point of death the love of His mother was obvious, she was in continuous groaning at every point of Jesus's walk to the cross. Every reasonable mother would have the same feelings towards any of their children perhaps because by considering the pain of child bearing, this alone is enough for the mother's love to be strong.

The above paragraph doesn't mean to undermine the love, care and responsibility of the Father in the homes, because very much equally the father's impact is very very noteworthy.

As JESUS came closer to the closure of His time here on earth, He obeying the scripture in Ex. 20:12a and Deut. 5:16 found His mother, Mary at the foot of the cross weeping and hoping that He didn't have to go through all this difficulty and He immediately identified that she would need to be looked after after His departure and then thought of an immediate solution by identifing also His closest disciple, John saying "Woman, behold thy son!... Behold thy mother!" John. 19:26-27 and scriptures recorded that she went home with that disciple from that day henceforth.

Exodus 20:12 instructs "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you."

The question we need to ponder upon seriously today and the following days to come is "Do you honour your father and mother by respecting, obeying, caring for them at every stage of their lives?" Do they ask you to do a thing and you refuse? Do you disregard their instructions? Do you see to it that they are taken proper care of, physically, spirituality and materially? When last did you get to ask your parents the "age old care" question - How are you?

Many people would care less how their parents fare on a daily basis, so long they are not directly hurt, they would prefer to ignore the welfare of their parents claiming the little they have isn't enough to go round them all.

These were the same parents that gave their all, deprived themselves of legal luxuries just to see that you were properly catered for while growing up, now it comes for you to pay back in the little way you can, you then turn the blind eye. Pitiable.

We all need to learn from the act of our Lord JESUS, knowing that our parents remain our parents, for it was through them that we were channelled into this mortal world and no matter the heights we attain, their positions remain unshakable. He saw it very important to see to the welfare of His mother even after He would be no more physically able to watch over her, you and I should also do same and make sure that while they are alive their days are enjoyed up to the fullest and that as much as is within our power to do for them, we do it diligently.

Righteously ask yourself this question, Am I honouring my father and mother? What answer pops up in your mind? Make proper amends today.

GOD bless you
